Ruble Surpasses Brazil's Real as Year's Best-Performing Currency.
The publication notes that the strengthening of the ruble became possible thanks to the measures taken by the Russian government as a result of the anti-Russian sanctions imposed. Russia imposed capital controls, obliged exporters to sell their export earnings in foreign currency, and required them to pay for natural gas deliveries in rubles.
It is noteworthy that a number of other countries that also tried to control the movement of capital failed to achieve similar results. The Turkish lira and the Argentine peso hit new record lows against the US dollar.
